Accurate diagnosing and appropriate treatment.
I am board-certified in both Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine. I have been practicing Psychiatry for twenty-eight years and started working with people who have addictions as a medical technician over forty years ago.
I started practicing Psychiatry in academics by taking a faculty position at the Creighton-Nebraska Combined Department of Psychiatry (UNMC) in Omaha, Nebraska. This was followed by a move to the Medical College of Georgia (MCG) in Augusta, Georgia. At UNMC, I was involved in many pharmacologic clinical trials. I taught Psychopharmacology Fellows at MCG. In 1995, I went into private practice in Augusta. My task became working with other professionals with various addictions. Most of my patients were professionals; health professionals, lawyers, clergy, and others. While in Augusta, I started working with Georgia Department of Corrections. I enjoyed and remained in this position until 2011 when I moved to Memphis, TN to take the Medical Director position at The Oaks at La Paloma, a 71-bed dual-diagnosis treatment facility. La Paloma accepted patients from all over the US. Our patients had various addiction disorders and co-existing Psychiatric illness.
Prior to Medical School, I did neurophysiology research and won an NIMH award for my work. I have been Principal Investigator on over forty Phase II or III (studies done prior to FDA approval) clinical trials of multiple medications. I also worked in Family Medicine for a short time before starting my Psychiatric career. These experiences have helped round me. These along with my training in Psychiatry, psychotherapy, and Addiction Medicine have helped me become a good diagnostician and Physician. Determining whether a person’s problems would better be treated by Psychiatric medications, psychotherapy, medical intervention, or a combination is one of my best assets.
Returning to academics in 2016 at the University of Tennessee, two colleagues and I created the Department of Addiction Science with an Addiction Medicine Fellowship. Our department was designated as a Center of Excellence by the Addiction Medicine Foundation. I started prescribing buprenorphine (Suboxone) in 2004. I don’t believe buprenorphine or other medications for abstinence are necessary for everyone, but it can save the lives of those who have not been able to stay sober by other means.
Teaching has always been a passion of mine. After leaving the University of Tennessee, I returned to private practice Educating my patients about their illnesses and treatments is often more rewarding than teaching in an academic setting. It is certainly more helpful for my patients.
I strongly believe that to be a good Psychiatric Physician you must also be a Medical Physician.
I have always believed that education is essential. Experience has shown me that the more a person understands their illness and their medications, the better they are at taking care of themselves.
I am always open to questions from patients about their illnesses and treatments. In fact, I stress the need to know and understand what the illness(es) are, what medications the person takes, and what each medication is for. The better you know your illness(es), the better you can take care of yourself.
Clearly, my most important objective is the well being of my patients. Treatment must be a joint effort. The better we take care of your health, the better you will feel.
Treated with appropriate medications. Once the neurologic aspects of the illness is stabilized, then psychotherapy if needed.
Chemical and non-chemical addictions (e.g. codependency, sex, exercise). Medication assisted treatment like Suboxone, naltrexone, and varenicline, along with group and/or individual psychotherapy.
